Sermon Introduction

Marriage is the most sacred of all human relationships. The reason for such is that God instituted it. Thus, all who fear and love God should look to the sacred text and follow the instructions. Before the first wedding, God assigned Adam to work on the garden, take care of it, and eat from any tree except for one. Then God said that it was not good for man to be alone. Therefore, God created the woman, a helper suitable for the man. Let us learn the crucial lessons from the Holy Scriptures.

Genesis 2:21-25 ESV

21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Notes

Marriage is the most sacred of all human relationships. The reason for such is that God instituted it. Thus, all who fear and love God should look to the sacred text and follow the instructions. Before the first wedding, God assigned Adam to work on the garden, take care of it, and eat from any tree except for one. Then God said that it was not good for man to be alone. Therefore, God created the woman, a helper suitable for the man. Let us learn the crucial lessons from the Holy Scriptures.

  1. God created man to take care of His creation, but man was alone. Therefore, God fashioned a woman from the part of the man. Then God brought her to the man. Adam immediately knew that God made her for him (2:21-23).

  2. God initiated marriage, which makes it sacred. God designed that man shall leave his parents and unite with his wife. However, this unity is not an ordinary joining together. The man and his wife shall become one flesh (2:24).

  3. Before the fall, Adam and Eve felt no shame even though they were naked. However, after their disobedience, they felt shame. Sin brings shame before the Holy One. Forgiveness in Christ removes it (2:25).

Application

  1. Men should focus on God’s assignment to take care of the earth. In the NT, the assignment is to grow in Christ, proclaim the gospel, and make disciples. While fulfilling God’s commands, he must value the companion that God gave him.

  2. Men should develop in many areas of life until they are responsible enough to leave the safety net of their parents. Then he can take on a responsibility to be the leader of his own home by uniting with his wife, who did the same.

  3. All humans are sinners. Thus, each spouse has something to be ashamed of before God. However, in Christ, there is forgiveness through repentance. After removing the shame of sin, the two may grow in intimacy and unity.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. Why did God make the woman?

  2. What should the man do before joining with his wife?

  3. How may one remove the shame brought by sin?
