Faith Saves & Condemns

Epistle to the Hebrews - Part 24 • Hebrews 11:6-7 • April 25, 2021 • English Service 10:00 AM

Sermon Introduction

The author explained that it is impossible to please God without faith. The Jewish believers should believe in God’s promises in Christ; otherwise, they will not please God. Despite the persecution and discrimination, the author expected the Jewish believers to continue in faith. No excuses. God would not be pleased with those who shrink back. Yet, the author encouraged them not to shrink back. Their faith should endure. The author defined what faith is; it is the assurance of the promises they hoped for and the proof of the promises not seen, both judgment and salvation. Noah was one example of a person of faith.

Hebrews 11:6-7 NASB

6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Notes

The author explained that it is impossible to please God without faith. The Jewish believers should believe in God’s promises in Christ; otherwise, they will not please God. Despite the persecution and discrimination, the author expected the Jewish believers to continue in faith. No excuses. God would not be pleased with those who shrink back. Yet, the author encouraged them not to shrink back. Their faith should endure. The author defined what faith is; it is the assurance of the promises they hoped for and the proof of the promises not seen, both judgment and salvation. Noah was one example of a person of faith.

  1. The author cited Noah, who believed in God (11:7a). God warned Noah of impending judgment. Humankind was corrupt in every way, but Noah found favor in God’s eyes. (Genesis 6:5-9). God spoke of the flood, which Noah had not witnessed.

  2. The author mentioned that Noah, in reverent fear, constructed the ark, which saved his family, and many animals. There is no record that Noah has seen a flood, yet he believed in God, who brought the flood, which covered the earth (Hebrews 11:7b).

  3. The author explained that by faith, Noah condemned the world. Noah’s faith, which resulted in obedience, was opposite the world’s attitude. They did not believe in the judgment of God in the form of a flood (11:7c). But Noah obeyed everything that the Lord instructed (Genesis 6:22).

Application

  1. Let us believe God’s word that there will be an impending judgment upon every person. The fiery judgment of God shall repay every sin and wicked act. Even if we have not seen eternal judgment, let us believe.

  2. In reverent fear, let us repent for the forgiveness of sin. Christ suffered and died for sin; then He resurrected from the dead. All who truly believe in His finished work shall be saved.

  3. Let us obey, by faith, everything that the Lord commands. Our very actions are a message to all who do not believe and repent. Even if the world ridicules us, let us continue to pursue Christ.

Discussion / Reflection

  1. What did God warn Noah about?

  2. How did Noah respond?

  3. In what way did Noah condemn the world?

  4. How may we live by faith in our NT context
