Epistle to the Hebrews - Part 42 • Hebrews 13:8-9 • September 12, 2021 • English Service 10:00 AM

Sermon Introduction

The author redirected the readers' attention back to Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever. The statement reflects the deity of Christ, which the author established earlier in the epistle. It also reflects the confidence of faith that every believer has in Christ. Like most New Testament books, the author warned against false teaching. But, conversely, the author encouraged the readers to strengthen themselves by the grace of God.

Hebrews 13:8-9 NASB

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever. 9 Do not be misled by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

Notes

The author redirected the readers' attention back to Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever. The statement reflects the deity of Christ, which the author established earlier in the epistle. It also reflects the confidence of faith that every believer has in Christ. Like most New Testament books, the author warned against false teaching. But, conversely, the author encouraged the readers to strengthen themselves by the grace of God.

  1. The author declared that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (13:8). The Scriptures reveal that Christ is the center of all that God promised and plan. He is the center of history, and He is the center of salvation.

  2. The author warned the letter recipients of false teaching, which might sound attractive (13:9a). For example, some false teachings say that Christ is not God; He was only a man. But Christ is 100% man and 100% God.

  3. The author instructed the Jewish believers to strengthen their hearts in the grace of God, not by food, which was part of the rules of the Old Covenant (13:9b). Grace is not about works; good works are a result of grace.

Application

  1. Therefore, we should anchor our faith in Him alone. Christ is superior to Judaism and superior to all. Let us fix our eyes on Christ, the author and finisher of our faith.

  2. Know who Christ is, know the Holy Scriptures, and guard against false teaching. Some say that Jesus was a man like us, but He became God, and humans can attain godhood. Avoid such false teaching.

  3. How do we find strength in His grace? First, believe the Father saves by grace alone through faith alone. Second, focus on faith, not works, which follows. Third, remember, we do not deserve grace; thus, let us humble ourselves.

Discussion / Reflection

  1. In what ways is Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever? Explain within the context of Hebrews.

  2. Why do you think false teaching can be attractive?

  3. How may we strengthen ourselves by grace?
