Sermon Introduction

The Pharisees cast out the man who dared to speak against them. The blind man remained firm with his testimony on how Jesus gave him sight. Instead of succumbing to the apparent bullying tactics of the Pharisees, he remained amazed at the miracle. His sarcastic remarks against the Pharisees would ignite an ire that would isolate him. However, Jesus would find him and reveal Himself to the one who used to be blind.

John 9:35-41

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?”. 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind”. 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt, but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

Notes

The Pharisees cast out the man who dared to speak against them. The blind man remained firm with his testimony on how Jesus gave him sight. Instead of succumbing to the apparent bullying tactics of the Pharisees, he remained amazed at the miracle. His sarcastic remarks against the Pharisees would ignite an ire that would isolate him. However, Jesus would find him and reveal Himself to the one who used to be blind.

  1. Jesus Found the Man

Jesus found the man whom the Pharisees cast out. Jesus asked that man if he believed in the Son of Man, referencing the prophecy of Daniel about the eternal ruler. The blind man asked about the Son of Man so he may believe.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” (John 9:35-41).

  2. Jesus Revealed Himself

When the man asked about the Son of Man so he could believe, Jesus revealed that it was Him. The man who could now see believed and worshiped Jesus. He worshiped because he understood that Jesus should be worshiped.

37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind” (John 9:37-39).

  3. Jesus Against Self-Righteousness

Some Pharisees asked Jesus if they were blind because they overheard Jesus speaking to the man who received sight. Jesus replied that if they were blind, they would have no guilt, but because they thought they could see, they were guilty.

    40
Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt, but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains (John 9:40-41).

Application

  1. Share God’s Plan

The Pharisees cast out the man who could now see, but Jesus found him. In the same way, we were found so that the Father may be glorified through Christ Jesus. We believe in the work of the Father who brings us to Christ. We now, therefore, share God’s plan to redeem His people.

  2. Reveal His Sovereignty

The man who used to be blind believed that Jesus was the Son of Man, which means He was the eternal ruler of the whole earth. We now, therefore, believe and submit to Jesus as our sovereign Lord, eternal ruler of our lives. We also proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Son of Man, Sovereign above all for eternity.

  3. Explain the Dangers of Self-Righteousness

Jesus explained that those who think they can see are the ones who are blind. We acknowledge our sins and spiritual blindness and express our need for the Savior. We now, therefore, preach against self-righteousness and the need for Jesus Christ.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. What did Jesus ask the man, and what was his immediate response?

  2. Why did the man worship Him after His claim?

  3. What did the Pharisees say after overhearing, and what was Jesus’ response?
