Sermon Introduction

It was a meaty discussion, filled with relevant topics, from Jacob’s well, living water, where to worship, the Messiah, and the Samaritan’s private life. There was no interruption until it ended. Or, it ended with the arrival of the disciples, who marveled at the sight. Speaking to a Samaritan would be something the disciples may never do unless they saw the Lord do it.

John 4:27-30

27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”.28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”.30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

Notes

It was a meaty discussion, filled with relevant topics, from Jacob’s well, living water, where to worship, the Messiah, and the Samaritan’s private life. There was no interruption until it ended. Or, it ended with the arrival of the disciples, who marveled at the sight. Speaking to a Samaritan would be something the disciples may never do unless they saw the Lord do it.

  1. Silent marvel

The disciples came back, and they saw something unusual. A Jew spoke to a Samaritan woman. And it was not just any Jew; it was the Lord. But not one of them dared disturb the conversation. No one spoke up; perhaps they were busy marveling.

27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” (John 4:27).

  2. She spreads the word

Instead of bringing back what she intended to fetch, the jar of water, she went back to tell others about Jesus. She even probably left in a hurry. So what did she tell them? First, she told them about how Jesus knew her. Then, she threw a question that made them curious.

28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” (John 4:28-29).

  3. People became curious

The Samaritan woman probably told the townspeople about her conversation with Jesus. A Jew who spoke with a Samaritan was already remarkable. How much more is the possibility of the Messiah? Thus, the people looked for Him.

    30
They went out of the town and were coming to him (John 4:30).

Application

  1. Marvel at His ways

The Lord’s ways, as revealed in Scripture, could be different from our ways. His ways are higher than ours. Therefore, let us expect to be amazed or even shocked by what we discover. In the end, we will say that His ways are amazing.

  2. Spread the word

The Samaritan woman spread the word. In the same way, every true believer should spread the word of who Christ is, what He did on the cross, and His resurrection. We may add our personal stories, but our stories should point to the Messiah.

  3. Pray for others to seek

Those who heard the Samaritan went out to look for Christ. Our prayer is that those who would hear the gospel and our stories would seek out Christ. By His grace, some of them will be saved.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. How did the disciples react to what they saw? Why did they react that way?

  2. What did the woman do when the disciples arrived?

  3. How, then, should we apply the learnings in our personal lives?
